This is intended only as a quick guide to the environment, tourism and development policies (where they exist) of the major Australian federal political parties (*at 23/05/06).

International
  • UNEP United Nations Environment Programme updated Environment for Development. To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations."
  • Bluewater Network "works to stop environmental damage from vehicles and vessels, and to protect human health and the planet by reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Bluewater is a division of Friends of the Earth - the U.S. voice of the world's largest network of environmental groups with one million supporters in 70 countries across five continents."
  • The Doomsday Clock (see also Wikipedia), has been reset and for the first time includes climate change as a variable.
  • Green Cross International "The mission of Green Cross is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity’s relationship with nature. Green Cross: * Promotes legal, ethical and behavioral norms that ensure basic changes in the values, actions and attitudes of government, the private sector and civil society, necessary to build a sustainable global community * Prevents and resolves conflicts arising from environmental degradation. * Provides assistance to people affected by the environmental consequences of wars and conflicts."
  • International Campaign to Ban Landmines *A network of more than 1,400 groups in over 90 countries, works locally, nationally and internationally to eradicate antipersonnel mines.   Members include human rights, humanitarian, children, peace, disability, veterans, medical, humanitarian, mine action, development, arms control, religious, environmental and women’s groups."
  • International Dark-Sky Association   "To preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting." ... Light pollution is not a matter of life and death. Yet it is important nonetheless, ... It produces only glare and clutter, costing more than $1 billion annually in wasted energy in the United States alone. Reducing light pollution is not difficult, but it does require that public officials and ordinary citizens be aware of the problem and act to counter it. ..."  What can YOU DO?  Lot's!  And there's plenty of practical material on this site to ... (ahem) show you the light at the end of the tunnel.
  • IUCN - The World Conservation Union "Founded in 1948, The World Conservation Union brings together States, government agencies and a diverse range of non-governmental organizations in a unique world partnership: over 980 members in all, spread across some 140 countries." Its mission is "To influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable."
  • The Nature Conservancy new listing "The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive."
  • Mines and Communities is "... concerned about the impacts of mineral extraction and processing, ... [and] we are committed exclusively to meeting the needs, and answering the appeals, of mining-affected communities, including workers organisations."  Extensive articles, information and links to other sites about the mining industry worldwide.  Especially useful for status of proposed projects and current campaigns.
  • Australia/Asia/Pacific

    Northern Rivers Guardians new listing Promoting and working for appropriate development in the Tweed Valley and the broader Northern Rivers of NSW.    Campaigns include No Rally in the Valley and Coal Seam Gas Exploration (CSGE).

  • Australian Conservation Foundation "Protect, restore and sustain". National directions, state and Asia Pacific issues, and a very interesting list of links to other sites, ranging from business forums to political parties.
  • Australian Wildlife Conservancy"AWC is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of Australia’s threatened wildlife and ecosystems.  Funded by tax-deductible donations, AWC is taking action to protect Australia’s wildlife by ... Acquiring land to establish sanctuaries for the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems ... AWC now owns and manages for conservation more land (917,000 ha) than any other non-government environment organization in Australia [and] protect over 100 threatened ecosystems and 135 threatened wildlife species."

    • Sustainability and The Future of the Tweed by Max Boyd. "Big Volcano and the Ecotourism Resource Centre are proud to sponsor these pages for the Max Boyd Group in the Local Government elections [held] on Saturday 27 March 2004.  In the past we have sponsored many community organisations in this way. This [was] the first time that we have done so for any political organisation."
    • Wollumbin Biosphere Reserve On Saturday 7 December 2002, environment groups based around the Mount Warning shield volcano hosted an initial public meeting to discuss a proposal for a biosphere reserve in this area.  A number of meetings have been held with more planned, to encourage local communities, stakeholders and interest groups to provide input into the nomination and management, to reduce our collective environmental footprint.
  • Bring Back Kirra  is a campaign by the Gold Coast surfing community to lobby for the restoration of the surf break at Kirra Point. The deepening of the bay will also lead to a greater exposure of Kirra Reef. The campaign recognises the significant community concerns over this issue for many years and builds on the valuable work of committed individuals and groups within the local community.
  • Byron Environment Centre "The Byron Environment Centre (BEC) is an incorporated body that has continuously operated as environmental information and resource provider in Byron Shire for well over 10 years. It serves as a contact point and meeting place and gives technical and campaign support to other groups in the area. Because of Byron's natural beauty, the region is under constant threat from developers and other commercial interests. The continuing presence of the BEC ensures that the environmental values of the area are not forgotten." As you'd expect from the creative types that inhabit Byron Bay, a slick, chic and smartly designed web site, with easy navigation to campaigns, useful links, membership info. (of course!) and more.
  • Bush Heritage updated "Bush Heritage is a non-profit conservation organisation dedicated to protecting Australia's unique animals, plants and their habitats.  We have a simple, practical formula for protecting the bush – we buy land of outstanding conservation value, then care for it.:"
  • Centre for Science and Environment, India "... Sends out a fortnightly electronic news bulletin to our network of friends and professionals interested in environmental issues." Note: At time of check (22/05/11), site was very slow to load.

  • Earth Beat - Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Transcripts and real audio from 1995 - 2005, Weekly radio program (no longer in production) focusing on environmental issues and solutions from around Australia and the world.
  • Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) "FIDO has a proud history of more than a quarter of a century of campaigning achievements to protect one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. FIDO's aim has always been "to ensure the wisest use of the natural resources of Fraser Island".  Simple text based site, with lot's of interesting info. relating to Fraser Island, including dingo management, light rail proposal, positive and negative values of tourism, 2020 Vison and more, so your back button will get a good work out! updated
  • Greenpeace Australia Pacific Australian campaigns and links to international offices
  • National Parks Association of New South Wales (NPA) " National Parks Association of NSW seeks to protect and conserve the complete range and diversity of species, natural habitats, features and landscapes of New South Wales. ... formed in 1957 to create a dedicated national parks agency and to establish a network of national parks in NSW. ... through a network of 19 branches and over 5,300 members."
  • The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) "is the State's peak environmental organisation with over 130 member groups, and individual supporters from across the state. NCC works closely with local communities and businesses, co-ordinates action groups across the state and advises the key decision-makers at a local, state and national level to protect and promote the NSW environment."   • The Crisis Papers  updated "Contributing to the [US] movement for peace and justice and the rule of law" since 2002.
  • Marking's - Environment and Conservation - Canadian Links   "Our world is our environment. It is the air we breath, the water we drink and the food we eat. It is where we live, play and love.   • Rainforest Action Network (RAN) new listing is headquartered in San Francisco, California with office staff in Tokyo, Japan, plus thousands of volunteer scientists, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens around the world. We believe that a sustainable world can be created in our lifetime, and that aggressive action must be taken immediately to leave a safe and secure world for our children. 
  • Sierra Club Home Page Founded in 1892, The Sierra Club has over 700,000 members. Their mission is to: "Explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth. Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment. Use all lawful means to carry out these objectives."
  • UNEP - Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean" updated   The United Nations Program for Environment has the task of leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples ways of improving the quality of life without compromising those of future generations.   The regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 13 small island developing States, with a population of about 570 million people.
